Hey I’m Chris.
I live in Georgia, I’m 17, still in high school (with all A’s), neuroscience kicks ass, I play guitar, I love death metal, my dad is a preacher (yay me, right?), I decided to be an atheist about three years ago and I still go to church more than Christians (crazy, I know).
Since I still go to church, I’m constantly surrounded by people who only know what they’ve cherry-picked out of the bible (I asked the youth pastor about how he knows if Jesus was even a real person, and I got a response that had “You have to realize, science isn’t as objective as it says it is” and I laughed for like five minutes). Yeah there are things that I know you guys would have the answer to that I don’t, but that’s why I’m here! I want to learn as much as I can.
Soooo…. Yeah here I am! Hopefully I’ll be welcome…

Welcome. I'm just wondering about you deciding to be an atheist, because it was much different for me; I decided to be more rational and atheism came out of that.
Always question all authorities because the authority you don't question is the most dangerous... except me, never question me.

Hi Caharris! Welcome.  :|

Thankfully, I got out of that a long time ago and listen to real people music now.  :P But I'm a lot older and, without all that pent-up aggression, metal just doesn't do the same thing for me anymore. I still like it now and then, I just don't invest the amount of time in it I used to.

Enjoy the forums!

It was a gradual process. Around 9th grade, I decided I wanted to actually see what Christianity was all about on my own other than just going by what people tell me, and I found out that I didn't like it. I didn't just one day sit up in bed and go "ya know what? I don't want to be like my dad, so I'm going to be atheist!" I do love both of my parents, but I can't be honest to myself if I were to say I believe in a god. I put months into thinking about what I believe, and this is how I turned out  :|

Oh, I just meant secular music in general - as opposed to christian music, which is usually, you know, lame.  :P

That's cool, the sentence just kind of stuck out to me.

Yes, I guess it could be :P I always get asked what it's like to have a pastor as a father once people find out I'm atheist, so I've gotten used to that question.

Good to see another rational mind rise above the morass of superstition.

Reality has a "liberal bias", ya know? If your youth pastor insists that science isn't all it's cracked up to be, then perhaps you should point out the following:

He distrusts science, but trusts everything science has created such as cars, cell phones, computers, airplanes. At the same time, he trusts God that he calls loving, peaceful, and merciful when the Bible clearly shows that he is an angry, violent, and genocidal mafia boss. Also, entrapment.

BTW, do your parents know that you are unconverted?
Quote from: "Ivan Tudor C McHock"If your faith in god is due to your need to explain the origin of the universe, and you do not apply this same logic to the origin of god, then you are an idiot.
